CITES PROTECTION FOR AGARWOOD

In a bid to curb illegal harvesting, a United Nations conference held in Bangkok votes to regulate the global trade in the rapidly declining agarwood. This aromatic wood is highly coveted as an incense material in the Middle East and a traditional medicine in Asia. The costly essential oil distilled from the wood is known as Oud - a tenacious and earthy perfume favoured by Sultans.

ILLEGAL SHIPMENT OF SANDALWOOD SEIZED IN TANZANIA

This highly prized tree has attracted businessmen who export the wood to Europe, the Middle East and Asia, especially India where the country's own native species of sandalwood, used mainly for perfumery, aromatherapy, cosmetics, and as an incense material, has become scarce due to over-harvesting.
